Preserving History Through Precision

When it comes to demolition, the task isn't always about bringing down structures; sometimes, it's about meticulously preserving the past while modernizing the present. At Trifecta, we are equipped to handle such delicate operations. One of our most notable projects is the restoration of Tillman Hall's auditorium at Clemson University.

The Challenge: Balancing Preservation and Modernization

Tillman Hall, a historic building on Clemson's campus, needed a thorough renovation to revive its original look and ensure safety and structural integrity. The auditorium, originally constructed with brick and wood, required a complete strip-out, with careful attention to salvaging historic items for reinstallation.

Project Highlights: Techniques and Innovations

  1. Full Strip-Out and Salvage Operations: The demolition process started with a full strip-out, meticulously removing and preserving historic items. Every piece of the original mosaic tiles and historic windows was handled with utmost care to ensure their integrity for reinstallation.

  2. Structural Enhancements: The auditorium featured 2-feet thick concrete bleachers supported by a metal stud framing system over the original wood floor. To support the structure during demolition, we added steel structures beneath the floor. Vibration monitoring was crucial to ensure the historic brick and mortar remained intact.

  3. Advanced Demolition Tools: The Brokk 70 Demolition Robot was chosen for its precision, allowing us to perform demolition work without compromising the building's historic fabric. This innovative tool was key to managing the delicate balance between demolition and preservation.

  4. Weight Distribution Management: Shore posts with rubber softeners and land bridges made of wood, plywood, and aluminum shoring beams were employed to manage weight distribution. This method protected the historic floors during material movement, ensuring the structure's longevity.

  5. Asbestos and Lead Abatement: Full containment with negative pressure addressed asbestos risks during ACM floor tile removal, while lead-based paint abatement ensured a safe environment. The building remained occupied throughout the renovation, necessitating stringent safety measures, including active fire sprinkler systems.

  6. Noise Management: Given that the building was occupied, managing noise levels was critical. Our team implemented strategies to minimize disruption, ensuring the ongoing activities in the building were not adversely affected.

Achieving the Perfect Balance

Our work at Tillman Hall is a testament to Trifecta's ability to balance modern demolition techniques with historical preservation. By incorporating advanced tools and innovative methods, we minimized the impact on the historic structure, resulting in a beautifully restored auditorium that honors Clemson University's heritage.

Setting The Standard

The successful completion of this Project sets the standard for future renovations of historic buildings. At Trifecta, we are proud to contribute to the preservation of our history while paving the way for modern advancements. Tillman Hall's restored auditorium now stands as a symbol of our dedication to excellence and precision in demolition and preservation projects.
